Default There's a new sheriff in town

I hadn't heard anything about it, but according to the Allegheny county sheriff's website, Sheriff DeFazio has retired and been replaced (on an "acting" basis until a new election I guess) by a guy that came over from the city PD.

Quote:
On November 1, 2006, Chief Deputy Sheriff William P. Mullen was sworn in as Acting Sheriff after Sheriff Peter R. DeFazio, with 36-years of service in law enforcement, retired from office.

Acting Sheriff Mullen came to the Sheriff's Office in April after a 37-year career in law enforcement with the City of Pittsburgh Police Department.
I hope they don't change the policies and procedure for issuing LTCF (i.e., they issue it on the spot...takes about 15 minutes). I'm a little worried because the new acting sheriff came from a long career in the upper brass of the city PD, and they tend to be anti-CCW.

Anyone know anything about the new guy?

I'm going to the Gun Show in a few hours and the Sheriff has an info stand there, I'll stop by and check.

I'm sure going to miss "Jumping Johnny DeFazzio".

Now I wonder if there will still be special deputie sheriffs around under the new boss man..

In response to Target 11's exclusive reports, Sheriff Pete Defazio says he'll crack down on special deputies who abuse their privilege. Target 11 interviewed a law enforcement officer who wanted to remain anonymous. That officer told Rick Earle that he encountered a special deputy when he was about to arrest that person for disorderly conduct. That person flashed a badge, and was released. Still, that officer says the practice is a slap in the face to 'real' police officers. Defazio says he won't stand for that kind of behavior from his special deputies, and he promised to revoke the badges of anyone using them improperly. But, Defazio says he won't end the practice of enlisting special deputies altogether.

The list of deputies include Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, noted defense attorney Jim Ecker, former Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey, renowned chef Stef Tedeschi, and more. In fact, more than 500 people have or are serving as special deputies.

Hey! I want my Badge!!! Where is Pete!

Nah, we call him Johnny..........

OK got the 411. I asked the 2 deputies at the show, "What is the new Sheriff thinking about in reguards to the CCW permits?"

A open ended question I'll admit- my bad.

In return I got this warm answer, "It's the law and he(Sheriff) has to obey the law."

Well having now drunk from the fountian of knowledge I went on my way.

Jumping Johnny DeFazio was a wrestler in the 60's or early 70's if memory serves.

Don't know if they are related.

Jumping Johnny is Pete's brother.

There is a long line of DeFazios in the local politics here.

I hope they don't go to an "Appointed" Sheriff instead of us voting on a Sheriff.

absolutely!

electing the sheriff is an important method of allowing the people to check the power of the government.

It would require an election/referendum to allow the sheriff's office to be an appointed position. Just like the way it was done with the coroners office last year.
