Sadly, demagoguery does not work that way. Anti-gun politicians only need a few anecdotes to "prove" that the average guy is not safe to CCW, since "as we all know" there will be shootouts at the local soccer game.
If it NEVER happens, then you can refute that charge easily. If it happens, then you're reduced to the much, much weaker, defensive-sounding line of "well, permit holders are statistically" very safe, which is a poor soundbite.
The point is that statistics have a weak hold in most people's minds. A recent, lurid headline will
always displace the stats.
