I'll give you the skinny on the hi-point. I own one, A 9c it was giving to me.
It does go bang when you pull the trigger and at 7 yds it is fairly accurate, but..... Every time I squeeze the trigger I squint and pray it doesn't blow up.
As a matter of fact I literaly just got done cleaning it. And I just sat there looking at it apart and wondered how it stays together.

The only reason I keep it is to show people the difference between it and my 239 when they are considering making a 9mm purchase.
Would I trust my life with it, no.
It is a odd cheap pistol that I occasionaly take to the range or let newbies shoot when I take them to the range.

Again, it goes bang, it works.
If thats all you can truly afford than get it. If it's possible to come up with a few hundred more, buy something else.
