Depends on what round it is, this is why you dont see rifles too often used in indoor ranges...the jacket can definitely zing you.

I've been glanced in the face from a .223 jacket but my shooting glasses took the brunt of the energy from it.

Someone at the one group shoot (I will let them speak up if they'd like to) took a 30'06 jacket in the face and ended up needing stitches.
