Default What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?

For the sake of this thread, I want to define modern as anything that was first produced after 1970. What would be best as a sidearm for soldiers that may be deployed anywhere in the world? Sig P220, G21, CZ97? Something else? What would you want if you were put into a situation where you could choose any .45ACP pistol in the world and expect it to perform well in any conditions, if needed?

Since the 1911 is disqualified and I'm a little leary of .45 double stack 2011's in harsh places, I'll go with the HK USP (stock, Tactical, SOCOM etc...).

I am a die-hard SIG fan, but now that I carry a G21SF on duty, I would vote for the Glock.

For a soldier, more ammo capacity is crucial.

The gun can also be abused more than a SIG and still function. A Glock will function in a dirty environment long after a SIG fails because of dirt.

Ok, why? I should have stated in my original post that a reason for anyone's choice would be more helpful and interesting. If anyone just wants to simply list their choice, that's fine as well.

With the rise in use of body armour, I would argue that anything chambered in .45ACP would not be an ideal sidearm for a modern soldier.

However, if i were forced to go with that caliber, I'd say Sig.

My fault, I assumed this was just a verbal gun porn thread, but if you want to know why then I'll gladly oblige.

    HK USP .45

    1. Very reliable (http://www.streetpro.com/usp/torture.html - http://www.hkpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31875)
    2. Accurate
    3. Already in use in military/tactical community, barrels for suppressors and tactical accessories/holsters are easily and readily available
    4. Can be had in almost any variant a user wants (DA/SA, DAO, control on left, control on right etc...)
    5. Very large trigger area makes use with gloves on easier than most other guns in the same caliber and class
    6. High capacity magazines
    7. Ambi mag release
    8. Low recoil
    9. Tough finish

I’ve owned 2 USP’s, I liked them both (a compact in .45 and a full size in .40), probably would have kept the full size if it were in 9mm (the caliber of most all of my other guns), the trigger on the compact wasn’t very good IMHO, but the full-size was a very nice gun. If I saw a 9mm used, I would be very tempted to pick it up and switch it over to another variant…though I doubt my STI would be too worried.

Ok. I'll momentarily side-track the thread. What caliber do you think would be the ideal for penetrating body armor? 5.7? 7.62x25?

I would say 5.7x28. I just wish there was more than ONE pistol chambered for it.
