Well, I guess yes. People DO lie to the police all the time. I think that is for self-preservation. When talking to a police officer the outcome your future lies in the words that come out of your mouth. If I had something illegal in the car, I certainly would lie, and possibly get away with it and go about my business, rather than tell the truth, and spend the night (or longer) in jail, and deal with costly legal consequences.
