If you go to the Supreme Court web site (as well as others) the various Amicus briefs in support of the lower court in the Heller (DC gun ban case) layout the truth about the nature, purpose and meaning of the Second Amendment in very great and convincing detail: the right to bear arms is a personal right.

There are a number of briefs and each deals with a different facet of the analysis. If you are interested in a lesson on the Second Amendment that at lawyer hourly rates probably cost more than a million dollars to research and write, take a look at some of those briefs. Its worth the while.
