You're diverging into the difference between, a locking gun cabinet or case, and a gun safe. A cabinet will keep out the youngin's (unless they're clever, sneaky and/or determined). A safe will keep out everyone, will have some protection against fire, and is heavy enough where the average smash and grab thief isn't walking out the door with it, even if it's not bolted down. That being said, I completely agree with you that if you want to keep your guns away from those you don't want touching them, and also to protect your investment from fire and theft, a safe is the only option.
