XD's are great guns....but they do have a rather high number of guns with bad extractors from the factory. After seeing how the extractor is inserted and removed....and the design that places it at 5 o clock with only the top third of the claw grasping the rimless case... it's no wonder.
I'm not sure where you're getting your information about many returned guns and issues with the extractor...I've yet to hear of anyone who's had an extractor problem requiring a return, let alone a "many reported" returned guns. Are you hearing this on Glocktalk? If you check out the XD forum, there aren't issues with extractors brought up much. The older pre-Melonite models were more likely to rust, but the Melonite treatment has cleared that up.
