That was it, the shoulder was worn down far enough that it could go past the retaining pin.

Brad, do you still have the old one, or a picture of it?

It seems like the firing pin is the weak point of the SKS, at least the Yugo SKS. That's the second one I've seen that needed to be replaced in as many weeks. The other one was mushroomed at the tip and the shoulder was worn down, but not quite as bad.
On the bright side, a new firing pin is only $5.00.
