The BATF is the only part of Govt. that can come to your home asking to see you still have your guns. If you are a gun dealer, they can do so once a year with out any papers, they can come back anytime later with papers and an invite, if you choose not to allow them to come, they can remove your licence. They are the ones that come knocking when you buy lots of guns in a very quick maner.
The other thing the BATF can do is make sure you never buy more guns, so if you did not do anything wrong, then the best deal is to work with the officers once they are properly identified, you can always say you will go to them and visit them if you dont care to have them in your home.

That at least is my .02 cents.
I was under the impression that the information the federal government gets about a gun purchase is the names of the people who buy them, and whether the buy a handgun, rifle, or shotgun, and that the PSP have a database with the more pertinent information about handgun purchases, i.e. serial number and make/model.
