I'd also have to say +1 to not carrying in a purse, even if it's one of the purses specifically made to carry a firearm. There are far too many things that can go wrong with that scenario and I tend to agree that if taken by surprise, you'll either drop it or swing it (might not be so bad, but not good enough).
Ironically, I have a friend who carries a G19 in a Fobus holster - literally floating around inside a floppy messenger bag, with all her other stuff sitting on top. I've tried to talk her into actually wearing the holster, or getting a gun purse if that's the way she insists on carrying, but she won't hear any of it. Me, I just wouldn't feel secure enough to do that with any of my guns.
